Are you curious about the ways in which the past has shaped the systems that are in place today?

Cultural Studies focuses on an overarching value of social justice by seeking to understand oppressive systems and working towards equity. Students will look at social justice through lenses of gender, sexuality, race, and the many ways they intersect.

American Studies, Caribbean Studies, and Latin American Studies, emphasizing the topics of empire, race, religion, and revolution. Situated at the bustling intersection of cultural studies, new media, critical theory, and popular culture, the burgeoning field of Media Studies examines the creative and critical practices of media consumers, producers, artists, and scholars, focusing on questions of representation, power, technology, politics, and economy.

The Museum Studies concentration investigates the history and political role of museums in society, the interpretation and display of a wide variety of cultural productions, and topics of special concern to museums as cultural organizations, using a multidisciplinary, practice-based approach to understand the historical development of this evolving field. A PhD in Cultural Studies, a dynamic, growing field of inquiry, equips you with the cultural expertise and critical research methods needed to transcend disciplinary boundaries as you examine ideological dimensions of culture and power struggles among competing systems of representation.

Program Highlights CGU is only 35 miles from Los Angeles, one of the most multicultural and diverse cities in the world with a wide array of internship and field opportunities. You can pursue elective coursework in other CGU departments and schools and across the colleges of the Claremont University Consortium.

Additional Program Requirements. Course Requirements 72 units Three level Cultural Studies foundation courses One Research Methods course One Transdisciplinary course Thirteen elective courses Up to 24 units transfer credit from previous graduate work in relevant fields may be substituted for the elective coursework.

Extended Faculty. May be repeated for credit when topic is different. May be repeated within the term. Recommended Prerequisite: Admission to a doctoral program, or permission of the instructor.

Reading and research on a specific topic guided by advisors, supporting the development of a Field Concentration. May be repeated within the term for a maximum 15 credits. Recommended Prerequisite: Admission to a PhD program, successful completion of all core courses, or permission of director.

Grading: This course is graded on the Graduate Special scale. Intensive research course, resulting in a Field Statement and oral defense. Notes: Requires permission of field advisor. May be repeated within the term for a maximum 6 credits. Recommended Prerequisite: Admission to cultural studies doctoral program, successful completion of core courses, and an additional 18 credits.

Develop research proposal that forms basis for doctoral dissertation. Notes: A maximum of 6 credits may be applied to the degree. Subject to continuous registration requirement. May be repeated within the degree for a maximum 24 credits.

Registration Restrictions: Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy. Enrollment is limited to students with a major in Cultural Studies. Doctoral dissertation research and writing under direction of dissertation committee.

Cultural Studies seeks to understand, critique, and transform cultural practices. Many students with degrees in Cultural Studies will go on to academic work in disciplines such as English, Communication, History, Anthropology, or Sociology, and especially in interdisciplinary fields like Film and Media Studies, Gender Studies, or Global Studies, and of course Cultural Studies itself.
