How to install carpet on hardwood stairs

Next, adjust the tongue of the hardwood plank with the groove of the nosing strips. As they get attached, the plank is now firmly on the stair landing platform.

To make the fitting better, use a rubber mallet to gently hit the plank into the stair nose strip groove. In the end, nail the plank and strip it together across the outer edge of the stair landing. For instance, if you have installed one long plank and then a short plank in the first row, do the opposite in the second row. This enhances the beauty of the stair flooring. So now, cut the pieces of hardwood planks to install in the second row of flooring on the stair landing.

Mix and match the length of the boards and install them by nailing the boards on the stair landing platform. Just the way you have installed the previous rows of hardwood flooring, do the same for the last row of the stair landing flooring. Measure the length and width of the remaining portion of the stair landing.

According to the measurement, cut and trim a hardwood plank. After you shape the hardwood plank, place it gently across the empty portion that meets the riser. After you place the last row of planks, fix them gently into the groove of the adjacent plank. Use the rubber mallet to make the fitting better. As the fitting becomes good, nail the plank to the stair land flooring. As you install the first landing of the staircase, do the same for the other landing areas in the staircase.

Take measurements for each row to fit the planks accurately on the stair landing. Therefore, repeat the procedure for all the other stair landings in the staircase. If you see the nailed areas are too visible that it is ruining the beauty of the flooring, you can fix the issue with wood filler.

Also, if the lower portion of the stair nose strip has any gap, you can fix it with the wood filler.

Use a color of wood putty that matches the tone of the hardwood flooring. Use a putty knife to apply the filler to the desired areas. Let it dry well and then you can sand the area to make the portion flat and smooth. If required, you can polish and stain the flooring too. Also, apply sealant on the stair hardwood flooring. While you can install any hardwood flooring that is moisture and impact resistant, you should still be very selective. Starting from the hardwood grade to the durability, all should be scrutinized while choosing the wood for stair landing.

Usually, pine is the best wood for a stair landing platform. It is the best value hardwood for stairs as it is extremely durable as well as beautiful. Pinewood is also a popular choice for its affordability.

Besides pine, you may also choose hickory or oak for stair landing flooring. These are some durable options too. The size of the stair landing may differ. Some can be large while others are small. But there is a minimum measurement of the stair landing area. Waterfall is considered to be the faster method of installing carpet on stairs and uses only one strip of carpeting.

After cutting a strip of the carpet the width of the stairs, you start at the bottom and work upward. If you know what a stair runner is, it's much like this—a continuous strip of carpet.

You can only use this method if your stairs have no nosing a section of the tread that protrudes beyond the riser. Cap-and-band is also called wrapped nose. Each stair receives two separate sections of the carpet: one for the tread, another for the riser. The tread carpet butts up against the tread and then wraps down and around the stair nose. Then another piece is added for the riser. More laborious than the waterfall technique, for novices it can produce a cleaner, crisper look because you don't have to deal with trying to tighten up uncooperative carpeting.

Essentially, the cut pieces do the tucking for you. One reason is that carpet eases the stair tread's edge. Carpet materials such as olefin and polyester are slippery.

Carpeting creates a softened curve on the nose of each stair. Typically, this sharp edge helps to provide grip. But when carpet blunts that edge, your foot cannot grip as well. Walking downward on carpeted stairs is especially hazardous. The edge is clear, and it's this edge that your foot needs to meet. Carpeted stair treads tend to visually merge, making the target difficult to identify. Every stair has the same color and texture. When going up carpeted stairs, both the tread and the riser have the same color.

Stair treads are, by code, 10 inches deep, minimum. This can present a slight trip hazard since your foot has less area to rest on.

Carpet is great at blunting or even completely eliminating the sound of people walking on wooden stairs. In addition, the wooden-colored floors applied on the stairs are also easy to match with any interior style and color, maintaining consistency and harmony inside the house.

Staircases turn out to be one the most at-risk places in the home, as these areas easily get dirty quickly when people usually wander up and down more than one time a day. Sometimes, the carpet on the stairs is ruined by a glass of red wine or your kids playing with colored stuff or liquid. Stairs are also on the top challenging area to clean when there are carpets. Meanwhile, it will be much easier to clean with wooden flooring.

You can apply many cleaning and polishing methods to make the floors always look brand new. Those methods include using cleaner from household items, vacuum, or mopping. Unlike carpet, you can refinish hardwood for any repairs and upgrades without replacing it.

This feature of hardwood also saves you a load of money and time. There is a wide variety of hardwoods to pick from, ranging from styles, colors, and patterns. You can opt from solid, prefinished, or unfinished wood floors for your staircase based on your preferences. Apart from the benefits mentioned above, we also love these hardwood floorings for their values.

Normally, people are willing to pay a little more for a property with wooden floors than one with carpets. Suppose if you want to sell the house in the future, wood stairs can be a plus point attracting buyers. Installing hardwood floors means that you bring a healthy indoor environment to your home due to its ease to clean, hardly accumulate dirt and stains, and the non-toxic nature material.
